What dreams have you been putting on hold?

We all have dreams. Nevertheless, many of us do not seem to have an urgency to fulfill our dreams; perhaps we subconsciously believe we have years to realize them. We simply cannot do it right now. Between going to school, working a job or two, family responsibilities, not enough money, and more, there is just no time to follow those dreams.

I have been thinking about this because recently I have talked to people who are midlifers and older and they all seem to end up musing about the things they would like to do one day. These desires reminded me of the desires of people in my family and my own. And it makes me wonder what if one day I wake up, I am OLD, and I have not followed my dreams because I was too busy pursuing my career, creating a family, or reaching that stability you supposedly need before I follow those dreams. And it is scary. Many of their dreams are similar to mine, like hiking the Camino de Santiago or backpacking through Iceland and watching the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights or writing a book.

There is an old Spanish Proverb which states, “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week.” How many times have we put off our dreams until tomorrow? I’d say, way too many. Our dreams should not and cannot wait. We have to go for them now! Here’s why.

1. Tomorrow is not promised.

Nobody likes to talk about death, but the reality is — everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day or the hour. Therefore, today is all we have. Don’t go to your grave with unfulfilled dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.

2. The world is waiting for your gift.

I know this may be hard to believe, but the world is waiting for YOU! Yes, YOU! You were born into the world with a unique gift, which nobody on this earth can duplicate. Sure, other people may be able to sing. But they’ll never be able to sing exactly like you. Sure other people can write, but they’ll never be able to write from the same perspective in which you write. Don’t deprive the world of your gift. It’s the oxygen that we need to survive. Thus, it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.

3. Unless you take the first step, your dreams will never come true.

You can dream about writing the great American play all you want, but it’s never going to happen unless you actually put pen to paper. You can dream about finding a cure for cancer, but it will never happen unless you actually go to school to become equipped with the necessary tools to find that cure. In other words, dreams don’t work unless you do. They require you to get your head out of the clouds and actually do the work to make them happen. Get to it!

4. You can’t let fear win.

One of the biggest dream killers is fear. There are so many people who could have achieved amazing things if only they weren’t afraid. Just think about all the things you’ve wanted to do, but allowed fear to convince you that you weren’t capable or good enough. In the movie After Earth, Will Smith’s character says, “Fear is not real. It is a product of thoughts you create. Do not misunderstand me. Danger is very real. But fear is a choice.” Choose not to let fear stop you from achieving your dreams.

5. Possibilities you never knew existed are waiting on you.

There are so many amazing opportunities and people waiting on you. Films festivals, panels, boards, the top people in your field, all these things are waiting on you! How do you get to them? Simple. Follow your dream. Doors that you couldn’t imagine open up when you go after what you want. You’ll never see those doors if you sit around waiting on a dream to happen, instead of actually working to make it happen.

6. You’ll be much happier if you go for it.

Imagine how much happier you’ll be if you’re living the life you always dreamed about. The only thing that is stopping you is you. Take control of your own happiness. Don’t keep your dreams waiting. Go after them today!

What’s Next?

“When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me.” — Erma Bombeck

7. You are Worthy of your dreams.

When we place our dreams on hold, we tell ourselves we are not worthy of living our best life. A life that is full of joy, love, and purpose. That we are ok living less, living small, and when we agree to live small, the world honors that agreement and treats us small. People being to take advantage of us, love seems to fade, and respect becomes almost none existant.

You can no longer wait to step into your Worthiness. Your Dreams can no longer wait for you to get ready to get started. Declare today is the today I no longer wait.

If you are struggling with understanding your purpose and dreams, let’s connect. Guiding people to build purpose-driven lives and businesses is what I do.
