Humble, Not Boastful: A Faith-Based Business Leader’s Guide to Shining

Humility and boasting are fundamentally contrasting attitudes that significantly impact your leadership style, especially within the context of a faith-based business. A humble leader acknowledges their dependence on God, recognizing that their abilities, success, and the prosperity of their business are not just their own doing but are influenced by divine guidance and providence. In contrast, boasting refers to an overblown sense of self-importance where a leader attributes all their successes solely to their personal abilities and hard work, without acknowledging the divine guidance that helped them succeed.

Scripture repeatedly emphasizes the value of humility. As stated in Proverbs 22:4, “Humility is the fear of the Lord; its wages are riches and honor and life.” This humility allows you, as a leader, to keep a correct perspective of yourself, acknowledging your limitations and remaining open to the wisdom and guidance that God provides.

Scripture also cautions against boastfulness. Proverbs 27:1 reminds us, “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.”

But how do we reconcile humility with the call to shine, especially as a faith-based business leader? How can we balance being humble with the need to lead, inspire, and create successful outcomes? The key lies in understanding that our ‘shine’ should not be a reflection of our own ego or self-glorification. Instead, it should be a demonstration of God’s love and grace working through us. As it says in Matthew 5:16, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Your role as a faith-based business leader is to reflect God’s love and grace in your leadership. This means utilizing your talents not just for self-promotion or personal gain but to serve others. It’s about acknowledging that every good outcome, every success, is a gift from God.

Hence, being a humble leader does not mean you should diminish your light or play down your abilities. Instead, use your gifts and talents to serve others, make positive changes. In this way, your humility becomes an enabler rather than an inhibitor of your shine. That’s the balance between humility and the call to shine for a faith-based business leader.

As faith-based leaders in the business world, let’s rise to this divine calling. Let’s shine, not for our glory but to reflect the grace and love of God through our leadership. Remember, your abilities and achievements are not just your own, but are fruits of divine providence and guidance.

Let’s commit to lead with humility, acknowledge our dependence on God, and use our talents to serve others. Let’s strive to create businesses that, while successful, also enhance the lives of those around us and glorify God.

This is not just an invitation, but a divine calling. Rise to the occasion. Let your light shine before others, but let that light not be your own but God’s reflected through you. In doing so, may we all be humble in spirit, mighty in deeds, and glorify our Father in heaven through our leadership. Today, choose to shine with humility. Let your light illuminate the path for others, and let the glory be God’s. Shine, not as a boastful leader, but as a humble servant in the realm of business.
